To kick off the new month and welcome new and returning readers, we’re adding a brief introduction to vegan nail polish, discussing what it is and tools and techniques for creating the perfect manicure. What is Vegan Nail Polish? Vegan nail polish essentially refers to nail polish without the inclusion of the “Toxic Trio” or the “Big 3.” The three main damaging chemicals in nail polish are formaldehyde, toluene, and dibutyl phthalate (DBP). Formaldehyde is a preservative. However, it is considered to be a carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Toulene keeps the nail polish smooth after application, but it has been linked to serious health issues related to the nervous system. Dibutyl phthalate prevents chipping in nail polish but has also been linked to health issues. Your skin can potentially absorb these chemicals. Thus, there has been a growth in focus on nontoxic formulas for nail polish. Many companies remove the Toxic Trio from their formulations, making them 3-free nail polish. Some, like DEMIblue, which is 20-free, have removed other ingredients related to potential health concerns. Because nail polish is essentially a cousin of paint, it is unlikely to see a completely organic ingredient list. However, removing these toxic ingredients is a step in the right direction. Eliminating formaldehyde, toluene, and DBP is a healthier choice for everyone. Trim and file Keeping your nails shorter prevents hangnails, nail breaks, and ingrown nails. Follow the curve of your nails when trimming, leaving a little bit of space at the end. As summer rolls around, it’s the perfect time to switch up your nail game. Here at DEMIblue, we are introducing How-Tos on our website and youtube page. Learn how to up your nail polish game, from applying nail polish to press-on nail hacks. It’s also oh-so-satisfying to see the perfectly smooth nail polish. Go in with a base coat. The pinky finger is a good starting point. When the base coat tries, apply one or more applications of your choice of nail polish color. If you are happy with the opacity of just one coat, you can stop there, but two coats are often the golden number to build up a solid color. Add any nail art, stickers, and others while the polish is still wet. Finish up with a top coat. Top off the free edge of your nail as well. This means wrapping the polish around the tip of your nail. Apply cuticle oil once everything has dried. Tips and Tricks in Application Use the 3-stroke method: Start with the brush at the center base of your nail, close to the cuticle. Push the brush back slightly to get it closer to the cuticle. Then pull the brush towards the free edge. You now have a stripe of polish down the center of your nail. Go back to the base where you started in the first step. This time, swipe the polish around the edge of the nail, taking the brush all the way to the free edge. Repeat with the other side of the nail. How to Remove Nail Polish Using a Soy Polish Remover rather than an acetone-based remover is healthier on your nails. Soy removers are less likely to dry out nails, but require a slightly different technique when removing polish. Soak a cotton ball in the polish remover. Vigorously rub the cotton ball over the nail polish. Because a soy remover is oil-based, it will take a little longer for the remover to take off all the polish. After some rubbing, the nail polish will be removed. How to Apply Press-On Nails DEMIblue press-on nails come with a step-by-step guide on how to apply our press-on nails. Choose a jelly sticker that fits your nail size. You can trim the sticker sheet for the perfect fit. Check out the video here. Find the nails that best fit your finger. You can trim the nails with nail clippers for the best fit. Check out the video here. Adhere the nail from the nail bed to the tip. Press for 10 seconds. Once they have fully adhered, file the nail to your desired shape. Press-On Nail Hacks Don’t forget which press-on goes with which nail! Once you have sized your nails down to their perfect size, take note of which press-on shape fits which nail using this method: Press-on nails are reusable! Just remove the stickers from the back of the nail, and you the nails are ready to be applied again. Bonus: Learn how to create ombre nails Start with a base coat. Once it’s dry, apply a latex-free, peel-off barrier around the edge of your nail. Choose two colors for your ombre! Colors closer together on the rainbow typically blend better. For example, blue-green, purple-pink, red-orange-yellow, and brown-cream. Place the two colors on the flat side of a makeup sponge. Dab them in the desired order across the nail. You may need several applications to achieve a solid blend. Once you are satisfied with the ombre look, peel off the barrier. You can go in with a small paintbrush dipped in nail polish remover to clean up the edges of your nail. Apply a top coat. Feel free to let us know what other how-tos you would like to see!

Healthy hands mean healthy nails. Therefore, there is a crucial connection between keeping your hands healthy and maintaining strong yet flexible nails. Healthier nails, in turn, mean a longer-lasting manicure. The key to beautiful hands and nails is keeping hands dry and clean but still moisturized. Achieving that balance would result in the best results for both your manicure and your hands. Avoid spending long periods of time in hot or cold water. If you soak your hands in water for a long time, it can dry out your hands and nails. Hot water, in particular, can strip away your skin’s natural oils, making your hands even more dry. While keeping hands moist is important, too much moisture can weaken your skin and nails natural properties. Wear gloves when doing chores. Whenever you do chores like washing dishes, spring cleaning, or gardening, your hands come in contact with water, chemicals, or other outside forces. Gloves create a barrier between your hands and potentially damaging elements. Wearing rubber gloves when washing dishes or cleaning will protect your hands from the effect of water and cleaning chemicals. Gardening gloves are a must to protect from the wear and tear of the natural world. Gloves also help retain the internal moisture of your hands and nails. The best nail length would be around 2-3 millimeters from the fingertips. Even if you leave your nails long, try to file down any sharp edges. Make sure to file in one direction.
